Walk Your Way to Good Health

Did you know that the Central Ohio area is becoming one of the best, if not the best area in the country to find an event in which to walk? It all starts with the New Albany Walking Classic, just named America’s Best Event for Walkers by WALK! Magazine.

On September 21st, 3500 walkers from throughout Central Ohio and the United States will be on the starting line to participate in either the 10k (6.2 miles) or the half marathon (13.1 miles) distance. This event offers participants the opportunity to walk for health and/or competition. What makes this event so unique and nationally acclaimed is the fact that no running is permitted. Walkers participate only with other walkers. Everyone who participates will receive a three-season race jacket, a finisher’s medal and so much more.

The festivities for the Walking Classic begin with the Mount Carmel Health & Fitness Expo at which free health screenings will be available. Cholesterol testing, glucose testing, bone density testing and gait analysis are only some of the screenings available. In addition, seminars will be held throughout the two-day event focusing on a myriad of different health topics. And if you wanted more, a wide selection of clothing from Moving Comfort and Brooks apparel will be available for purchase.

Why has the New Albany Walking Classic become so successful? There are a number of reasons. First, there is no race in the country, running or walking, that provides the value presented by the Classic. The give-aways are valued at many times the cost of entry to the event. Second, walkers often feel intimidated when they are in a race with runners. This walker-only venue provides a comfort level that is very appealing to walkers. Third, the opportunity to compete within a wide number of age groups for both men and women enables walkers to achieve success that is unavailable in other similar event.
