The first official day of summer begins on June 20 th and that means that the heat is not going anywhere for a while. Keeping cool with the rising temperatures is extremely important and should not be taken lightly. Heat related illnesses, like a heat stroke or heat exhaustion can be prevented with the necessary precautions. There are a variety of ways to have a safe and cool summer.
- Avoid the hottest hours of the day. At noon the earth gets the most direct sunlight heating up the atmosphere and making 4 pm the hottest time of the day. Opt to exercise during the cooler hours of the morning and evening.
- It is best to wear loose light clothing instead of dark clothing because it will attract more sunlight.
- Even if you have air conditioning, running fans will keep air circulating making your house feel cooler.
- During the summer it is important to maintain hydration and drink plenty of liquids. Avoid coffee and alcohol as they deplete your body of liquids causing dehydration.
- Find a local pool and go swimming. Swimming is a great way to cool off from summer temperatures.
- If you know are you going to be outside for an extended amount of time plan ahead. Invest in a spray bottle or mini-hand-held fan. These are good examples of little things that will make your day more enjoyable and will help to cool you off.
- Do not forget sunscreen. Nothing makes for a miserable day than getting fried in the sun. Try and stay in the shade as much as possible to avoid direct sunlight.
- Choose light and cooler foods in the summer. Avoiding cooking over the hot stove will not only prevent from heating up your home, but will keep you cooler as well.
